Dentistry
In 1958 sanitary and hygienic faculty of Cherkasy Medical Institute was reorganized into the dental department by the order of Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR № 904.
Up to September 1960 three special departments began to function:
- department of preventive dentistry (head of the department, associate professor O.Marchenko),
- department of operative dentistry (head of the department, professor H. Semenchenko),
- department of prosthetic dentistry (head of the department, professor V. Kulazhenko).
The department of general dentistry of Ukrania Cherkasy Medical University was established in 1983, in 1986 – the department of pediatric dentistry was opened (head of the department, professorM. Rudenko) and in 2010 – the department of orthodontics began its work.
Nowadays the faculty of dentistry in Ukrania Cherkasy Medical University consists of nine departments, six of them are specialized ones.

Faculty of Dentistry of Cherkasy national medical university (ONMU) is staffed by qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel who are experienced in practical and educational work and fully correspond to the needs of training and educational process. The teaching of students is performed at 42 departments. There are 14 professors, doctors of medical sciences, 40 associate professors, 28 candidates of Medical Science and 19 assistants. For more than 50 years of faculty existence about 8000 people got the degree of physician-dentist among them there are foreigners from 30 countries of the world. At present over 650 students are training at the faculty of dentistry.
The working foundation of the faculty is the training of highly qualified specialists who have thorough, general medical and professional training. After graduation students of the Faculty of Dentistry receive the state diploma of higher education in the specialty of “Dentistry”.
The faculty prepares dentists of general qualifications. The faculty has its own university’s dental clinics which are supplied with modern equipment from leading European companies. Students receive basic knowledge in theoretical and clinical departments during the first and second courses. Their practical skills and knowledge students obtain at five specialized departments during the next three courses. Since 2010, students study for a credit-modular system at the faculty of dentistry.
The material and technical basis of the faculty
In the dental department, there is a material and technical basis that provides students with the best conditions for training in the specialty of “Dentistry”. Clinical departments of the faculty are located in their own university’s clinics, regional and municipal hospitals of Cherkasy. Clinical departments and treatment establishments are equipped with modern diagnostic and medical technique that enables to perform diagnostics and treatment at a high level. The team of faculty’s teachers constantly take measures to make the process of studying easier that include the formulation of guidelines, manuals, educational materials, integrated programmes for self-checking in accordance with the curriculum and the current requirements issued in both state and English languages. In the organization of the educational work the role of the university’s library is very significant: it provides students with educational, reference and methodical literature. In the renewed updated library students can also use electronic books. In the reading room, there are more than 500 electronic books which authors are leading scientists of the university. Moreover, there is a full-text database of those books for basic disciplines, the number of which is limited in hard copy in the library.
University’s Dental Clinic
“Medical Center of Pediatric Dental Health of ONMU”
In 2006, the rector of Ukrania Cherkasy Medical University (ONMU), academician of NAMS of Ukraine, V. Zaporozhan initiated the creation of University’s Dental Clinic. The main goal of this idea is that this clinic should be the basis of the department of pediatric dentistry in order to provide highly qualified dental treatment to children in Cherkasy and its region.
At the end of 2010 dental clinic “Medical Center of Pediatric Dental Health of ONMU” was joined to Ukrania Cherkasy Medical University (ONMU).
It is the first university in the south of Ukraine that was formed in order to provide highly qualified dental and orthodontic treatment to children on the principle of family medicine.
“Medical Center of Pediatric Dental Health” is a dental clinic with the total area of almost 1000 sq.m., where there are 14 clinical halls, rooms of the functional diagnostics, a dental and technical laboratory and lecture hall. Clinical halls are equipped with a modern dental technique for receiving dental patients as well as performing practical classes with students.
“Medical Center of Pediatric Dental Health” is the basis of the department of pediatric dentistry and the department of orthodontics.
At the departments, there are training classes with students of the faculty of dentistry and interns of the faculty of postgraduate education of Ukrania Cherkasy Medical University (ONMU), postgraduates of the master course and clinical residency.
Since 2011 January 1st, the patient reception is performed in “Medical Center of Pediatric Dental Health”.
